Chichibufutori Textile Atelier is a small textile manufacturer, which is located in a mountainous town Chichibu roughly 70km northwest of Tokyo. We are the only manufacturer that produces silk textiles called “Chichibu Futori”.
Chichibu has been flourishing as a town of the silk industry. Chichibu Futori, which is an original form of Chichibu Meisen textile, was started to produce in Chichibu region in Edo era (1603-1868). “Futori” means thick-weaving, and it is woven with thick silk yarns spun from non-standard silk cocoons.
We use centuries-old techniques in the all processes (spinning silk, arranging warps, dyeing, weaving, and finishing) to make complete hand-made products. And we use natural materials, such as plant dyestuff, according to traditional methods.
But centuries-old techniques don’t mean centuries-old fashions. By using these techniques, we are trying to produce new products to meet modern needs, rather than reproduction of traditional ones.
